Civil society organizations (CSOs) play a key role as independent watchdogs in holding governments, international organizations, International Financial Institutions and Multilateral Development Banks as well as transnational corporations accountable for their (positive or negative) contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. This is particularly relevant with regard to the rich and powerful actors in the global system, given their economic influence and political weight in international decision-making.
But independent monitoring is also crucial at national level. For this reason, in dozens of countries, civil society organizations and coalitions have joined forces to produce national CSO reports on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Their findings and recommendations are essential building blocks for the global Spotlight Report. The number of independent reports is growing steadily.
